Amazing show last night as newly signed 4AD artist and up and comer, Indians took the stage with a beautiful mixed set of acoustic and electronic tunes, followed by the full on classic-rock-merges-with-modern-rock sound of Other Lives.
I snapped a few pictures but as usual they do the sound no justice.

Rooftop Films Presents My Teenage Stride Pics of Cymbals Eat Guitars

If you haven't made it to Rooftop Films yet, you are missing out. The vibe is quite unlike anything else in the city. Perched above the city listening to great live music, watching film shorts...and free drinks after...just not on the roof. They don't want anyone to fall.
Although there was some sound problems we had a blast the evening that Cymbals Eat Guitars played (blurry pic above) and every night since has been just as great. Hop on the roof if you get the time. This week has the search for "Winnebago Man" on screen and My Teenage Stride playing some tunes to warm you up.

Intermissions at Union Hall

Intermissions may not be known now, but give it some time. Playing with Motel Motel, The Go Station and Tropic Of Nelson the group of former Bling Kong-ers surprised many with their intense, self-proclaimed "first gig ever". Many doubters arose. How could this be show number one? Wielding two drummers, inaudible lyrics and serious stage presence, they dared you to take your eyes and ears of them. Most attempts at this failed.
There sound was certainly Battles inspired, but there were other global influences that tinged their progressive rock.
We'll keep a close eye on them and let you know when you can see them again.
We apologize for the photo, you can see much better ones here. And we don't have anywhere to send you to listen to the band, but we will. We hope.

Wire at South Street Seaport

Thought the seaport isn't the best venue for really any artist, it is especially not good for a band of this magnitude. Not that Wire is a huge act, but their sound is. But wasn't so, last night at Manhattan's South Street Seaport. The band zipped through a set that kept most fans happy as they pulled from their long catalog. All in all it was a good show, considering the cost but if you enjoyed the evening, chances are a smaller venue would be even better. Photo care of Kevchino.

Cloud Cult - Bowery Ballroom 04/18/08
Friday night I went to see one of our favorite bands here at Musicology NYC, Cloud Cult. The Minneapolis based band fronted by Craig Minowa, did not disappoint.
Their live performance embodies everything that you love about music. Within the same set you may find yourself: dancing, crying, laughing, singing, and clapping (among other things...like contemplating the meaning of your existence). This is purposeful, as the band wants you to get the most out of it's performance. And you usually do.
This show was no different.
The band played a set that concentrated on their most recent album Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes) and last years The Meaning of 8. The visual affects that the band use are as powerful as the music. A screen flashes digital art behind the band, as an artist on stage paints along with the music (Connie Minowa, Craig's wife). Scott West who usually paints along side Connie was absent.
Rumor has it that this will be the last Cloud Cult album as well as the final tour. If you have never seen this band, please put it on your to do list.

Tha National at BAM - 02/22/08

Last night Brooklyn's The National performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, "Brooklyn Next" series. Seeing a band like them at seated venue was quite unusual for the fans as well as the band. You could sense them feeling a bit uncomfortable and it took a few songs before they actually settled into a groove. Even singer Matt Berringer mentioned something about it. Musically the band sounded great despite guitarist's Bryce Dessner's back injury. He remained seated for the majority of the performance. The stage seemed rather small because of his lack of mobility. This, however, took nothing away from the music as the band played tighter than ever. The horn section and orchestration filled in the set beautifully. A highlight of the evening was seeing Sufjan Stevens step onto stage to join the band on the track "Ada", which he co-wrote with the band. And of course, "Mr. November" rocked.
Opener My Brightest Diamond surely gathered some new fans as singer Shara Worden's strong vocals and goofy stage antics set the stage for the National.
Set list (and photo) via TMS (one complaint, we are at a rock show and notes nor pictures are allowed because the ushers say my phone is bothering other spectators - and how did you pull it off TMS?):
Start A War. Brainy. Baby We'll Be Fine. Slow Show. Secret Meeting. Mistaken For Strangers. Squalor Victoria. Abel. Wasp Nest. Racing Like A Pro. Ada. Apartment Story. Untitled New Song. Karen. Fake Empire... City Middle. Mr November. About Today. Gospel.

Human Bell at Sound Fix in Brooklyn
Musicology NYC made our way down to the free Human Bell show at Sound Fix. Their music translates very well live. And their moniker is near perfect. A very human feel - whatever that means. But there was a lot of emotion packed into those guitar duets. My apologies to Mr. Bell, all the photos that I have of him are blurry.

Phosphorescent - Live at Union Pool, New Video, Tour Dates, Free Downloads
Maybe we're a bit late in discovering these guys, but it is always wonderful to stumble upon a band like Phosphorescent. Last weekend the one-man band that is Matthew Houck in the studio, became a rocking quintet that just about outdid headliners the Dodos at Union Pool (notice: just about - the Dodos were pretty damn good themselves - so call it a draw). The tunes from that night are undoubtedly swirling in every head that was at Union Pool on Saturday. And I wouldn't be surprised if the band sold out of CD's after the show. It was that good. Passion goes a long way. Matthew Houck has that.
Check out the free downloads over at Daytrotter. Tour Dates below.
