The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Let's Wrestle, Knight School at the Bell House 3-13-09

Friday at the Bell House in Brooklyn was an amazing night. From beginning to end the sold out crowd enjoyed three solid acts.

Opening duo Knight School jammed through a quick set of garage driven pop tunes. Although there weren't too many people at the show those that were there were quickly won over.

Moments later the second act -UK's Lets Wrestle played to a crowd that grew with each song. The band sounded purposely clumsy, this matched with their quirkiness made them a great act to watch-literally and figuratively (keep an eye on them in '09). Lyric lines like "drink till we vomit" are convincing rather than forced and the songs are perfect pop yet dirty. There is undoubtedly something enjoyable about this band's jangle punk sound and they have a chance of getting it in front of more ears at SXSW later this week. Watch the video below or click on the above link for examples.

New Musicology NYC fave and headliners The Pains of Being Pure At Heart seem to be on the verge of exploding. Their sound merges numerous 80's legends like Jesus and Mary Chain, Psychedelic Furs, Morrisey and Lush and their live show was like watching a band begin an upward trajectory. We were lucky to be there! If you get a chance you should check out all of these acts at one time or another.

CMJ in Full Force - Friendly Fires Highlight the week!

My first go at CMJ has brought many things, one thing it hasn't brought is sleep. I finally caught up on some this morning. One thing that it has brought is the realization that UK band Friendly Fires are the next breakout band. We caught them at the Annex and were blown away. For a glimpse of they're antics, watch below:

Another realization is that Jay Reatard is not quite as poppy in person as he is on record. We saw him wreak havoc at Maxwell's in Jersey City. For a full report read Nick Greto's report over at kevchino (You may have to go below the fold).

Tonight, we plan to head to the Mercury Lounge for Wye Oak and The Music Tapes. And later on to the Bowery Ballroom to see Marnie Stern, A Place to Bury Strangers and Vivian Girls. But another realization is that plans don't pan out as intended at CMJ. Regardless, it's been a blast!

Wire at South Street Seaport

Thought the seaport isn't the best venue for really any artist, it is especially not good for a band of this magnitude. Not that Wire is a huge act, but their sound is. But wasn't so, last night at Manhattan's South Street Seaport. The band zipped through a set that kept most fans happy as they pulled from their long catalog. All in all it was a good show, considering the cost but if you enjoyed the evening, chances are a smaller venue would be even better. Photo care of Kevchino.

Radiohead - Remix

Kevchino has done a great remix of the song "Nude" from Radiohead's In Rainbows album. Vote and listen below. Radiohead, iTunes and GarageBand are giving you the chance to remix as well.

From kevchino news:
To make remixing easy, the separate 'stems'* from the song are available to purchase from iTunes here. The 'stems' available are bass, voice, guitar, strings/fx and drums. You can mix them in any way you like, either by adding your own beats and instrumentation, or just remixing the original parts.

If you purchase all five 'stems' from iTunes during the first week they're available, you'll be sent an access code to a GarageBand file ready to open in GarageBand or Logic. However, you don't need GarageBand to do a remix, all the stems are in iTunes Plus format and compatible with several music software platforms.

Finished mixes can be uploaded here where the public will listen and vote for their favourite remix (voting ends May 1st). You can also create a widget allowing votes from your own website, Facebook or MySpace page to be counted as 'mix votes' back on radioheadremix.com. Radiohead will listen to the best remixes.

The All-For-Nots Debut

Everyone's favorite movie star, Kevin from Kevchino will be featured in the debut of the Michael Eisner produced internet TV show, The All-For-Nots.

It is a show about a fictional indie rock band (called the All-For-Nots, duh), that gets dicovered by a "blog" called kevchino (yes that kevchino) and goes on tour. The show will premier this Sunday (tomorrow) March 9 at 7:45 on HDTV (a pay channel like HBO). After that you can watch via kevchino or at the All-For-Nots Page.

Additionally, if you are headed to SXSW Eisner himself will be there to lecture and premier the show on Tuesday March 11.
