S. Carey sort of snuck up on me with his fine new LP Range of Light. He is in another little band called Bon Iver.

Volcano Choir - " Byegone" Video
Almost a little bummed at the accessibility of this new Volcano Choir song. Their last album was awesome in it's strangeness. This however, is still a damn good tune. Stoked for the new LP.

Bon Iver - "Beth/Rest" Video
The song "Beth/Rest" from the most recent Bon Iver LP is equally awesome and 80's cheese. The video is about the same.

Bon Iver - "Towers" Video
You've probably already seen this but I am still gonna share. It's a great track from the self-titled Bon Iver album that was released last year that somehow was more hyped than his first. It's good though, so it's OK.

Bon Iver Live at His High School
This is just about the coolest thing I've read in awhile via Stereogum. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame visited his High School and made the band kids feel way cool. Who's playing that flute on "Lump Sum"?
From current student Leo Strei:
"It's just been awesome to have him with us. To have someone of international fame like this with us is fantastic. What is really cool is how straightforward he is with us. He talked to us as musicians and never talked down to us; it was just like we had been friends with him for a long time."

Bon Iver - "The Wolves (Act I and II) Video
Bon Iver AKA Justin Vernon added a lot to the music scene in 2007, although his album For Emma, Forever Ago was officially released on Jagjaguwar just last week. It was our number two album last year and probably will be in the top ten this year as well. A new video is now on Bon Iver's Virb page. Here's the video:
Of course there is a story behind the video:
Seems we are always moved by Vernon, whether it's the art or the story behind the art.
Of course there is a story behind the video:
"This is by any description, a project that almost never happened. Rushing to get to Wisconsin for fresh snows and still frozen air, Director Matt Amato arrived in Eau Claire, hometown of Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, in late January. In the midst of warming up after a long journey and excitedly telling Justin about all the projects he had on the horizon, Matt received a phone call. One of his best friends had suddenly and tragically passed away. All logic and reason were thrown out. Nobody knew what to do. Matt didn't know whether to stay or go, or how he would even manage to get back to the airport in his state of shock. Justin just tried to stay calm. Between a flurry of phone calls and attempting to contact some of Matt's family to accompany him home, night fell. Almost by default, Matt remained in Eau Claire in the company of his newest acquaintance. Something about it was safe, and that was enough. The next morning, Matt read the lyrics to 'The Wolves' and felt as if those were the exact words he needed to hear from his departed friend. That pretty much sealed it. Matt would stay and work, even as the thought of making a video became the last thing on their minds. They built a bonfire and just let it burn all day and into the night, and Matt filmed. The weight of the circumstances propelled the collaboration to a place these sort of projects don't often go. The cathartic spirit of Bon Iver's music had found its kindred spirit in imagery."
Seems we are always moved by Vernon, whether it's the art or the story behind the art.

Essie Jain/Bon Iver/Elvis Perkins - Bowery Ballroom 12/07/07
Friday Nights show at the Bowery was amazing. We caught most of Essie Jain. Her voice is absolutely gorgeous. Elvis Perkins in Dearland was not quite as melancholic as I had anticipated and the band was full of stage antics. But the highlight of the evening was by far the buzz-worthy blog superstar Bon Iver (AKA Justin Vernon). Though he only played six songs, he won over the crowd quickly. The man simply pours his heart out. I overheard someone say, "someone broke that dude's heart". Yeah, ya think? At one point Vernon sat down at the piano and played a new song that no one had heard "except my mom". Which was supposed to earn him "cute points". Talent aside, he seems like that kind hearted fella that everyone knows. Someone yelled "You are a real human being!" He chuckled and replied that he had never heard that before. Funny, you kinda understand what the dude meant. What a great show. Check out more photos at my flickr.
