Plus much, much more.

March Band Of The Month

Each month we will post our current favorite band for the present month. It will be based on opinion. Strictly opinion and growth of said opinion. For Example, Radiohead are always held in high regard here at Musicolgy nyc, so even though they were very active this month and In Rainbows is still playing away like crazy, it will be very difficult for them to win a band of the month award because it would be nearly impossible for us to love them anymore than we do.
This month we have a lot of veterans that were in high contention for the reward. And the winner will not surprise anyone. There will be no discovery of new artists this month. A couple contenders were the Grand Archives, Thao Nguyen and NIN, but with the release of the new REM album and the new Portishead on heavy rotation it really only came down to those two artists.

And the winner is...

As if you can't tell from the attached photo...

Portishead, by a landslide. What a great album they have coming out this month. We cannot wait to see them live, when they will probably win this award again.

Your prize can be collected when you contact me.

Musicology NYC Heavy Rotation - Grand Archives

We have been listening to the new self-titled Grand Archives record almost nonstop around here. The band was formed by one Matt Brooke as we have explained. Here's a nice video for the song "Miniature Birds" to check out before you run out and buy the album on our word.

February Band of the Month

Each month we will post our current favorite band for the present month (we are a few days off this month).

It was a difficult month to decide on a winner once again. Phosphorescent was a contender after a live show had us diving into their current record. Another competitor was Cloud Cult, as news of their new album and song had us digging deep through their wonderful discography. If we could have scored a copy of this Grand Archives record they probably would have had a better chance.

Ultimately it became very clear who our winner should be. Quite simply they blew our mind at the Mercury Lounge a couple weeks back and we haven't stopped thinking of them yet.

Our congratulations and thanks goes to (another) Frenchkiss Records band, the Big Sleep! The bands new record Sleep Forever was released and has created quite a stir. If you have never seen this band live, it is your fault. Do it now.

Congratulations again to the Big Sleep!

Grand Archives Tour Dates, MP3

Mat Brooke has been in some pretty great bands - from Carissa's Wierd to Band of Horses we certainly have a talented dude on our hands. With Grand Archives we look to be in for another treat. The bands songs have been leaking for months, but the albums release date is quickly approaching. The Grand Archives will be released on February 19, 2008 via Sub Pop. It's vibe is like happiness and sadness served on the same platter. Below you'll find an MP3 for "Torn Blue Foam Couch" and tour dates.
