March Band Of The Month

Each month we will post our current favorite band for the present month. It will be based on opinion. Strictly opinion and growth of said opinion. For Example, Radiohead are always held in high regard here at Musicolgy nyc, so even though they were very active this month and In Rainbows is still playing away like crazy, it will be very difficult for them to win a band of the month award because it would be nearly impossible for us to love them anymore than we do.
This month we have a lot of veterans that were in high contention for the reward. And the winner will not surprise anyone. There will be no discovery of new artists this month. A couple contenders were the Grand Archives, Thao Nguyen and NIN, but with the release of the new REM album and the new Portishead on heavy rotation it really only came down to those two artists.

And the winner is...

As if you can't tell from the attached photo...

Portishead, by a landslide. What a great album they have coming out this month. We cannot wait to see them live, when they will probably win this award again.

Your prize can be collected when you contact me.

Pitchfork Interviews Radiohead's Colin Greenwood

We are still way pumped for Radiohead's closest thing to a NY show. Read what bassist Colin Greenwood had to say about In Rainbows and the band that Radiohead have become here.

Top One Countdown: Reasons REM is Back

We have been listening to REM's new Accelerate record and we kinda enjoy it. A lot of people are saying that it's a return to form for the band, and the last time they said that we were stuck with that monster (as in monster bad, not monster good) of a record called..errrr...Monster. This one feels better than Monster did for sure.

And the number one reason we feel so good about it is...

1) "Man Sized Wreath"

Listen to it and the rest of the album here.

New Phosphorescent Video - "A Picture of Your Torn Up Praise"

If I were a new Phosphorescent video I would be..."A Picture of Your Torn Up Praise". Man, we love this band.

New REM Album Stream, Stipe Comes Out Of the Closet, and Interview

I swear I - along with the rest of the entire world - thought REM's singer Michael Stipe came out of the closet at birth, but that's not the case. In coming out of the closet he told Spin this:

“I recognize that to have public figures be very open about their sexuality helps some kid somewhere out there”

Either way, we're happy that he has come to terms with this. The band's new album, Accelerate that supposedly is a return to form is streaming at iLike. Additionally there is an interview with his Stipe himself over at Pitchfork.

New Bomb the Bass featuring Fujiya & Miyagi "Butterfingers"

The dudes from Fujiya and Miyagi nearly made our top albums of '07 and were certainly one of our top live acts as well. Well, the boys are back - sort of. On this video - that plays like a still photo - they join Tim Simenon of Bomb the Bass fame.

Portishead New Video - "Machine Gun"

As you already know, we are big Portishead fans here. And as we promised, here is their new video for the song "Machine Gun".

Kicking and Streaming: Sun Kil Moon Album Stream

Though Musicology NYC fave Sun Kil Moon don't have any myspace friends, they sure do have another beautiful album on their hands. Their new album April will stream until tomorrow, at the bands friendless quarters. The album will be available - appropriately - on April 1, 2008. Singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek will be at the Highline Ballroom on June 13, most likely performing some of these tunes.

New Portishead Video Premiers Tonight!

The first single from Portishead's return album Third will be called "Machine Gun" and the video will be premiering tonight on their website.

The album, which we have been listening to a lot lately is completely different from old Portishead, yet unmistakeably the same. Just say this, if you liked Portishead before -and you have an open mind to change- you will like this album.

Make sure you check out the new video, which we hope to post later.

Lisps at SXSW

From what we have been reading, The Lisps seem to be having a ball down at SXSW. Check out the old vid for "Pepper Spray".

Opening For Radiohead 2008: Liars, Underworld, Make Your Own Video

Radiohead is all over the news today. In addition to the announcement that Liars and Underworld will be opening in North America, we also found that you can make a video for them.

From AniBoom:

It's the perfect match between revolutionary music and the mind blowing possibilities of animation. The *In Rainbows Music Video Contest* judged by Radiohead is here. Submit your storyboard or video clip until April 27th. Feel the music. Make the video...make history!

Portishead Third Song Stream - The Rip

Ten years we have waited. And now the wait is just about over.

We don't have our hands on Portishead's third studio record, Third, just yet, but we have listened to this song, "The Rip" and yeah, we kinda like it.

It opens like a classic Portishead song with the haunting swirls that we have certainly heard before. But suddenly it becomes stripped down to a plucking guitar that reminds us of singer Beth Gibbons work with Rustin Man (Paul Webb). Gibbons vocals sound, as always, dreary yet somehow beautiful and refreshing. But just as we become comfortable with this new mellower Portishead accompanied by trademark Gibbons, they change again, adding some synth that feels less Portishead-y than it should. Yet seconds in we are won over again as we think twice...Yes. This. Is. Portishead.

If only we had the full length.

Give it a listen over at Prefix.

If I were at SXSW...

It's time to play, if I were at SXSW..., where we here at Musicology NYC dream of being important enough to get the invite to the big Austin gig.

Today seems a little harder than yesterday. Here goes...
