HEROES OF THE DANCEFLOOR RELEASE ‘TORCH,’

In the spirit of the holiday season:

Heroes Of The Dancefloor’s “Torch” is a fusion of big band and swing Jazz, mixed
with Hip Hop, R&B and dub influences with deep souldful vocals. The lead
single ‘Same Scandal’ from “Torch” is an infectious dance track with a funky
house groove. “Torch” follows the underground success of “Momentum,” the first
album of a series from Heroes Of The Dancefloor, which in its entirety will
benefit the homeless.

All proceeds of “Torch” including publishing
mechanicals and royalties will go to two New York charities, ‘Picture the
Homeless’ (www.picturethehomeless.org) and ‘Coalition for the Homeless’ (http://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org/).

Guns N' Roses - "Chinese Democracy" Brief Review

As we all know, the new Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy has been in the making for quite some time. Because I have always been a fan of GNR, I have always wanted to like it. 15 years of rewrites and production changes, make it nearly impossible to do so. Despite the credit, this is not a GNR record. It's an Axl Rose solo project. Some of the songs are OK. Some suck. It's sort or crushing when this happens to your childhood idol. I choose to ignore it and pretend that it all ended in the '90's.
We rate this album "it's OK" for nostalgic reasons alone. If it were a new band we may give it an "it sucks"

Femi Kuti - "Day by Day" Review, Rated "Very Good"

Femi Kuti's continues on the path began by his father, Fela. The new album, titled Day by Day is, as expected, fun (danceable) and serious (political) all at once. Afrobeat's first son may already be a legend and his first album in seven years was well worth the wait. Check out the title track at his myspace by clicking on his name. We give this album a "Very Good" rating.

New Review Style

From this point forward, Musicology NYC will be doing all album reviews in a more conversational manner. For example, when we are out at a bar and someone asks us how the new Beck album is we usually have to give a review in three sentences or less or lose the person to a hot blond a good song or a shot of whiskey. Since peoples attention spans are shrinking and we can get a lot more reviews done and sound a lot less pretentious, we are going to do that here...three sentences or less. It's not gonna be easy to be so short winded but we are gonna try.

Additionally, our rating system use to be on a five star system. We are also changing that. Again, when someone asks you about an the new Beck album at a show you usually say a)its amazing b)its really good c)it's good d)it's ok e)it sucks. So yeah, it's still five tiered, but it's now much easier to understand.

Jazzanova - "I Can See" via Youtube from "Of All the Things"

Jazzanova is back with more dance influenced jazz. Watch their new video below.

Berlin's Jazzanova collective formed in 1995, after DJing with one another
at a club called Delicious Doughnuts. Alexander Barck, Class Brieler, Roskow
Kretschmann, Stefan Leisering, Axel Reinemer, and Jürgen von Knoblauch shared a
common goal of blending their collected inspirations together to create a new,
sophisticated sound, with debts owed to nearly every form of dance-oriented
music from the past several decades.
It's to be expected that Jazzanova would
turn in excellent productions with every track, but what's most impressive about
Of All the Things is the work that Jazzanova haven't made their forté in the
past -- songwriting, arrangements, and the pairing of each vocalist with a song
that works perfectly for them.

Guns N' Roses - "Chinese Democracy" 4 Star Review via Rolling Stone

Shocking review about the new GnR record, Chinese Democracy begins like this:

Let's get right to it: The first Guns n' Roses album of new, original songs
since the first Bush administration is a great, audacious, unhinged and
uncompromising hard-rock record. In other words, it sounds a lot like the Guns
n' Roses you know.

Dawn Iulg - The Waking Hours Review

A coffee shop without a singer-songwriter is like a coffee shop without coffee. The genre tends to rely on the coffee shop just as the coffee shop tends to rely on the genre.

It has become almost customary to hear in the background, as you order your latté, a strummed guitar and a crooner laying it all out on the table-either hoping to be the next Dylan or just…well…hoping. A singer-songwriter is nothing if not for the emotion they pour into their songs. There are no gimmicks or tricks to keep the attention off the lyrics. They are the intended focus.

To stand out in this pool, is not easy.

On Dawn Iulg’s album The Waking Hours we learn she is talented enough to stand out. And we learn a lot about the story teller through the characters we meet along the way.

On the opening track “Quake” Iulg ties a sweet melody to the tormented lyrics, “I wanna shake you, I wanna shake you/I wanna shake you/For your mistakes”. The organ in the song begins the distress. But it is the words that stick with you and not just for their melody. You are commited…tied to the character. Temptation creeps in as she takes her final sip of wine and we are left wondering for an outcome. Her story is weaved well.

On “Sinking Stones” Iulg continues on this path. She channels some of her influences into a country tinged tune that’s bass line is the first thing to catch your ear. The song continues along the tortured path that “Quake” began. It will bring to mind a few Lucinda Williams tunes, but by no means is it theft. Iulg keeps her influences at a distance, making them quite simply, influences.

The highlight of the record is the final track “Farther On”. If it were possible, your back button on your iPod or CD player could get worn out. It is a song with a simple plucked acoustic guitar that brings to mind a young Sinead O’Connor and easily chokes up the listener. “Farther on we’ll find the answers” she sings with ardor. And with the conclusion of the too brief six-song EP you are left with nothing but the repeat button and the hope that Dawn Iulg will play your neighborhood coffee shop soon.
