Portishead put on an amazing show last night at the Hammerstein in NYC. My mind was blown that Beth Gibbons can still sing so beautifully. If you get a chance they are a must see! Here they are on Fallon last night.

I've been waiting for the perfect moment to play this new Portishead song. Had to be a time when I could have a clear mind to judge. Portishead's new video was sent out this morning. It is called "The Rip" from Musicology NYC fave, Third. Read about it and watch it below.

Portishead - "Third" Reviewed

Now that the album has been officially released, Musicology NYC will quickly cash in with an opinion on Portishead's "Third".

For ten years we have waited. For ten years we have expected Portishead to pick up exactly where they left off. The great thing about Third is the fact that it is not a continuation.

But it also is a necessary part of the Portishead equation. It feels as important as Dummy or Portishead, yet the album is worlds apart from the band's past.

Lost is the trip hop sound that they helped create and found is something new. Something different.

Third seems to be influenced by kraut rock, jazz and funk. And the sounds are fresh-spun in a way that only Portishead could.

Lyrically the album goes to darker placer than anything that has preceded it. There are many highlights including the gorgeous "The Rip". Which begins with an eerie wobble sound familiar to fans, but the track moves to a unusual spot as the song progresses. The album surprises at every turn including the harrowing "Machine Gun", with it's military like percussion.

The album closer "Threads" is the closest thing to Portishead of old, yet there is no hint of a hip-hop beat. It breathes more excitement into an already good album and as it ends it has you wanting more.

Hopefully we don't have to wait another ten years for another with the word Portishead attached to it.

NPR Sneak Peek: My Morning Jacket, Shearwater, Death Cab For Cutie

Musicology NYC is a longtime NPR fan, but we read about this goodie bag over at Stereogum. They (NPR not Stereogum) have a nice preview of upcoming albums including a Death Cab song and a My Morning Jacket (holy moly, quite different) song that you most likely haven't heard. Also Portishead and Shearwater, Wolf Parade and Elbow (very nice record) amongst others. Enjoy.

Portishead "Third" Live Webcast

Portishead will be performing seven songs from their new album Third tomorrow evening. If you can stay in tomorrow night this may be worth it.

Portishead in Portishead airs exclusively on www.portishead.co.uk on 11th April at 11pm (GMT) - the band will be performing 7 tracks from the new album 'Third'. To view this you will have to sign up. Your information will be kept by Portishead and not passed on to a 3rd party so we advise signing up early if you haven't already done so to avoid frustration at 10.55pm.

After the 40 minute programme airs on the bands site it will be broadcast on Current TV.

March Band Of The Month

Each month we will post our current favorite band for the present month. It will be based on opinion. Strictly opinion and growth of said opinion. For Example, Radiohead are always held in high regard here at Musicolgy nyc, so even though they were very active this month and In Rainbows is still playing away like crazy, it will be very difficult for them to win a band of the month award because it would be nearly impossible for us to love them anymore than we do.
This month we have a lot of veterans that were in high contention for the reward. And the winner will not surprise anyone. There will be no discovery of new artists this month. A couple contenders were the Grand Archives, Thao Nguyen and NIN, but with the release of the new REM album and the new Portishead on heavy rotation it really only came down to those two artists.

Portishead, by a landslide. What a great album they have coming out this month. We cannot wait to see them live, when they will probably win this award again.

Portishead New Video - "Machine Gun"

As you already know, we are big Portishead fans here. And as we promised, here is their new video for the song "Machine Gun".

New Portishead Video Premiers Tonight!

The first single from Portishead's return album Third will be called "Machine Gun" and the video will be premiering tonight on their website.

The album, which we have been listening to a lot lately is completely different from old Portishead, yet unmistakeably the same. Just say this, if you liked Portishead before -and you have an open mind to change- you will like this album.

Portishead Third Song Stream - The Rip

Ten years we have waited. And now the wait is just about over.

We don't have our hands on Portishead's third studio record, Third, just yet, but we have listened to this song, "The Rip" and yeah, we kinda like it.

It opens like a classic Portishead song with the haunting swirls that we have certainly heard before. But suddenly it becomes stripped down to a plucking guitar that reminds us of singer Beth Gibbons work with Rustin Man (Paul Webb). Gibbons vocals sound, as always, dreary yet somehow beautiful and refreshing. But just as we become comfortable with this new mellower Portishead accompanied by trademark Gibbons, they change again, adding some synth that feels less Portishead-y than it should. Yet seconds in we are won over again as we think twice...Yes. This. Is. Portishead.

Portishead "Third" Reviewed, More Tour Dates

If I wasn't excited before. I certainly am now. This is from Mark Stewart's (of The Mafia) review for Spex about the new Portishead album Third.

On »Third«, Portishead deliberately reject this approach in favour of an old technique, known as crate digging in DJ circles: the quest for those weird and wonderful sounds nobody else has ever used.

One of the album’s most interesting new tracks, »Magic Doors«, reverts to the old DJ method: Portishead take a Funk beat and slow it down, pitch it right down to half-speed, then add one of Beth Gibbons mournful litanies. In this, Portishead follow the lead of Led Zeppelin who, a few decades earlier, took Blues numbers from the 1930s and slowed them down to half their speed.

Portishead Name Third LP, "Three", Set Release Date, Add Tour Dates

It seems that we have been waiting for this album for like ten years (we have), but finally Portishead have given us a release date for their new record via there website . They have also added tour dates, but still no US dates (except Coachella). These dates are listed below the words from the Portishead webpage:

Coachella Rumors

What would it take to get you out to Indio, CA the weekend of April 25-27, 2008? The rumors have been that both Portishead and My Bloody Valentine will be at the shows. Those two excite me a lot, but I was at a bar on the LES and I spoke with someone who seemed certain that the Led Zeppelin reunion will continue! Add Radiohead to this and my ticket is as good as bought.



I have also heard the Verve and David Bowie mentioned. Yikes.

hello we have mixed all the tracks and the whole album is shit, so were
going to start all over again. ok only kidding...sorry ! its sound pretty good
but we have to go back to a few things in the next few weeks though. it sound
