Mayer Hawthorne - "A Strange Arrangement"
Want to read something funny? Mayer Hawthorne's debut album A Strange Arrangement began as a joke. I suppose that isn't too funny. But it is certainly ironic...Because this album could very well be the best release of 2009.
What started out as sort of a joke for close friends and family, has suddenly and unexpectedly become something very real.
There is no doubt a certain amount of "realness" is poured into this album. You can look no further then the roots from which it stems. Though it is molded from the peak of Motown it mixes easily with modern hip hop. Things might feel retro but it simultaneously feels fresh. And though this vibe is key, just a important is the pain and pleasure that Mayer shares with us from not only his vocals but the instruments.
He plays just about everything on A Strange Arrangement. And the amazement does not stop there. We dare you to keep these songs out of your head. You'll be singing them in the subway. You'll be that dude singing in public. And you'll be OK with it. Just like A Strange Arrangement, the joke is on those that just don't get it.
Back to the point, this album might have started as a joke but it brings some serious shit. Go get it now. Or at least when it comes out on 09-08-09 at emusic.
We give it an "It's great".

Portugal. The Man - The Satanic Satanist Review
For some reason or another I keep going back to this Portugal. The Man
album The Satanic Satanist. Each listen grows closer to the last and I
wonder why. Is it because it's modern rock that swerves into classic
rock territory without feeling recycled? Is it John Baldwin Gourley's politically
charged vocals? Is it the melodic hooks that suck you in like an iPod
ad? Is it the hippy hiding in me from my high school
days?
Yeah it's that and more. It's a wonder that these dudes don't have a
bigger name. Speaking of names...the stand out tracks are opener "People Say" and
"Golden". When Gourley sings from his heart. He is the man. Portugal.
The man.
We rate this album "it's good". Go get it.

New Radiohead Song For Peace - "Harry Patch (In Memory Of)"
Listen to this heartbreaking new Radiohead tune about Harry Patch, the last living English veteran in WWI, who inspired singer Thom Yorke when he was still alive as he discussed his thoughts on war. Apparently the lyrics are from a speech he gave.

Counting Crows, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Augustana present The Saturday Night Rebel Rockers Traveling Circus & Medicine Show
Didn't know that the Counting Crows were still playing. But after importing half of my over 1200 CDs to an external hard drive (and having just passed C) I can't help but want to see them live again.
“We want to give fans a completely different concert experience this summer than they’ve been getting," says Adam Duritz from Counting Crows. "We’re turning your normal concert experience on its head. We’re going to go out on the road with a bunch of our friends and we’re all going to play shows together. No more 'too short' sets from the bands you love.
"Make sure you come out early, because when the curtain rises, Counting Crows, Michael Franti & Spearhead, and Augustana are all going to be right there together on that stage, along with any other friends and special guests happen to be in town and feel like joining the circus for a night.
"We won’t know what we’re going to do until we do it but we’re gonna try and make a glorious noise. One way or another, by the time me and my pals walk off that stage, we’re gonna make sure you remember that the Circus came to town.”
